R-22 is no longer manufactured. It was phased out under EPA regulations due to its environmental impact. Remaining supplies are limited and significantly more expensive than current refrigerants.
If your system uses R-22, it can still be serviced while supplies are available. But when a major repair is needed, replacement with a current refrigerant system is usually the better financial choice.
R-410A is the most common refrigerant in residential systems installed between approximately 2010 and 2025. R-454B (and similar low-GWP refrigerants) are used in newer equipment manufactured after 2025.
These refrigerants are not interchangeable. Equipment designed for R-410A requires R-410A. R-454B equipment requires R-454B. We identify which refrigerant your system uses before doing any refrigerant work.
Refrigerant is the working fluid that moves heat through your HVAC system. In cooling mode, it absorbs heat from your indoor air at the evaporator coil and releases that heat outside at the condenser coil. In a heat pump, this process can be reversed to provide heat.
Refrigerant is not consumed. It circulates in a closed loop. If your system is low on refrigerant, it leaked out. A system that "needs refrigerant" every season has a leak that needs to be found and fixed.
A system low on refrigerant cannot transfer heat efficiently. The air coming from vents feels less cool than it should, and the house does not reach the set temperature.
Low refrigerant can cause the evaporator coil to freeze. If you see ice on the indoor unit or the refrigerant lines, turn the system off and call us.
A system operating with low refrigerant works harder to achieve the same cooling effect, which increases energy consumption and operating cost.
A refrigerant leak sometimes produces a hissing sound. This is worth investigating rather than ignoring.
